Mastering the Creative Journey: Unleashing Fragility, Harnessing Resilience, and Cultivating Antifragility for Photographers and Artists
In the world of photography and art, the path to success is often paved with challenges and uncertainties. Whether you're a sophisticated professional or an aspiring newcomer, understanding the concepts of fragility, resilience, and antifragility can profoundly impact your creative journey.
Let's delve into how these principles apply to photographers and artists alike.
Fragility
The concept of fragility in art and photography can be compared to walking a tightrope without a safety net. In today's digital age, we often rely on social media and influencers for inspiration, with trends and styles frequently originating from external sources. While these opportunities can be beneficial, they can also lead to addictive behaviors due to our inherent fragility as humans.
Consequently, fragile people may face creative blocks or rapidly exhaust their "inspiration" as they are significantly influenced by these external factors.
Resilience
Resilience is about handling tough times. For artists and photographers, this means getting through creative slumps, dealing with criticism, and not giving up when faced with rejection or failure. But they still deal with anxiety and insecurity during this process. Resilient artists get through these tough times, without exceeding their baseline.
Resilient people cope with the difficulty, recover from it but don’t use the distress as a springboard to explore the unknown.
Antifragility
Antifragility, a word made up by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, goes beyond resilience. Resilient people withstand tough times and bounce back, thus remain unchanged, but antifragile people become stronger. In art and photography, antifragility means using criticism, rejection, and creative blocks to grow and innovate.
An antifragile artist thrives in uncertain and chaotic situations. They can turn problems into progress, using hard times to boost their creativity. What makes these artists special is their ability to change and grow when faced with challenges. They don't just survive tough times; they use them to push their creativity forward.
For antifragile people, the difficulty is their springboard.
How to break out of the Rabbit Hole of Fragility?
Facing an “art blockade” may feel like endlessly falling down a dark hole. But there are methods which can help you finding the rope to hold on and climb back up into the warmth of the shining sun.
Give yourself time off the digital world. There are endless ways of getting inspired from analogue sources like e.g. magazines, books, people, nature and so on.
Use Social Media for a specific use case only, not for “getting inspired” also known as doom scrolling. Social Media is designed to pull you into a never ending spiral. It hypnotises you.
Creative Writing. Just like journaling but for your creative ideas. Set yourself a timer (e.g. 5 minutes), chose a topic and write down everything what comes into your mind. It doesn’t matter if you write in full sentences or just key words.
Movement. So simple. When you feel stuck, go for a 20 minutes walk or move your body. Maybe do some ecstatic dancing to let all of your energies flow and get rid of negative impact, or literally jump into the cold water.
These are just a few opportunities you can choose from. What’s important, that you choose what feels right for you. Acting without force and thrill, but with joy and love.
“You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.” – Paulo Coelho.
